Introducing, Fluvio Recruiting & Talent Development
WRITTEN BY DEVON O’ROURKE, FOUNDER & MANAGING PARTNER
Today marks yet another exciting evolution in our firm’s history; we’re unveiling a recruiting and talent development service line, which will provide companies with a holistic solution to attract, recruit, and nurture top-tier product marketing talent.
This launch is a natural extension of what we are already known for; providing exceptional product marketing talent. With the addition of recruiting and talent services, we now offer a more complete suite of products and services to help software and technology businesses scale more effectively and efficiently throughout each stage of their lifecycle.
What is Fluvio's recruiting & talent development offering?
We’re offering three services - 1) recruiting, 2) hiring (contract-to-hire), and 3) learning and development - that can be deployed singularly or holistically to attract, recruit, and nurture the very best product marketing talent.
Recruiting: Fluvio helps product marketing leaders assess and plan their organization's talent needs, generates an elite talent pipeline leveraging Fluvio and PMA’s robust candidate database, and places the perfect candidate.
Hiring (contract-to-hire): Fluvio Launchpad helps product marketing organizations safely and effectively staff their teams by vetting, contracting, and coaching talent into full-time positions with clients.
Learning & Development: PMA and Fluvio help organizations reach product marketing excellence by building and delivering enterprise-level training programs and installing bespoke processes and frameworks tailored to client needs.
Why are we launching a talent service?
As the world’s first pure-play product marketing consulting firm, and the exclusive consulting partner to the Product Marketing Alliance, we know a thing or two about high-caliber product marketing talent. While our core business remains to help companies establish and accelerate the product marketing discipline through embedded consulting services, we’ve also become a lightning rod for ambitious product marketers looking for their next role. As we help companies shape their product marketing function and deliver on critical projects, the opportunity to match great talent to full-time opportunities has become an obvious win-win for both our clients and the product marketing talent marketplace.
Now is the perfect time to launch this service line. Last year was rough, according to Trueup.io there were 1,996 layoffs at tech companies in 2023 with 428,384 people impacted (equating to 1,174 people per day). While optimism has been restored, 2024 has started with yet another wave of layoffs, at the close of Q1 there had already been 389 layoffs at tech companies with 69,146 people impacted (886 people per day).
In 2020 through mid-2022 there was a massive product marketing talent shortage. In fact, this was the impetus behind creating Fluvio. I recognized that product marketing has crossed the chasm and every company was aggressively trying to hire and establish a PMM team; however, there just weren’t enough seasoned product marketers in market. This led to explosive growth in salaries. In 2021, the average salary in the US was $120k, increasing ~23% to $148k in 2022 (according to Product Marketing Alliance).
With the large headcount reductions over the past year, the dynamic has shifted rather dramatically. There is now a massive amount of product marketing talent available and limited open jobs; this shift has led to the first decline ever measured by PMA’s salary survey (9.2% decline in the U.S. and 10.6% globally).
There is no denying it; building high-functioning product GTMs is a challenge. We know that 30-40% of all new tech products fail to achieve their revenue or profit goals (HBR). A fairly significant factor is simply due to poor internal GTM alignment, over 10% of revenue is lost due to poor GTM alignment according to IDC (International Data Corporation). While it’s certainly a challenge, when done right, new product GTMs drive business growth. According to McKinsey the top quartile of product launches generates 90% of the revenue for new products, while the bottom quartile of product launches generates only 1% of revenue.
Great product marketers turn this challenge into an opportunity. With the new talent imbalance (hundreds of talented product marketers are available for work), it's increasingly looking like now is the time to begin hiring and restaffing for growth. To prepare for the pendulum swing back to high-growth hiring, we’re building up and vetting our talent pipeline and having discussions with dozens of technology companies gearing up to accelerate their teams’ growth in the second half of 2024 and beyond.
